2004 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERSThe Cecilia Connelly Memorial 2004 ScholarshipA scholarship awarded to a deserving woman of any age who is an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in an accredited course of study in the field of Underwater Archeology. Awarded To: Beverly GoodmanBeverly Goodman’s interest in underwater archeology is an extension of her interest in the sciences, human cultures and nautical history. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin and has worked in underwater expeditions in Caesarea, Israel, Yemen and Turkey. For her Ph.D. dissertation, Beverly is reconstructing the history of Turkey’s Liman Tepe’s coastline from the Early Bronze Age to the present. She plans to become a world-class underwater archeologist specializing in the identification and reconstruction of ancient harbor facilities. The Hugh Fletcher Memorial 2004 ScholarshipA scholarship awarded to any dive master, assistant instructor or instructor to learn to teach or assist the disabled to dive. Awarded To: Kathleen RandKathleen Suzette Rand is a native Nevadan, a survivor of thyroid cancer and she is dealing with Multiple Sclerosis. She is certified as an Open Water Diver by the Handicapped Scuba Association and she will use this scholarship to become an underwater naturalist and photographer. Kathleen’s other passions include adaptive skiing and traveling. She is a certified professional buyer, a freelance writer, a student studying for her PhD in business and a single parent. The Lifeguard Systems (LGS) 2004 ScholarshipAwarded To: Teri JeromeTeri Jerome is a public safety professional. She has worked as a forest firefighter and an Army Combat Support Military Police reservist. For the last 14 years, Teri has established a career within the Michigan Department of Corrections prison system. When it comes to scuba, Teri is a Dive Master Candidate whose primary interest is shipwrecks and deep diving. Teri plans to become an Instructor and is currently taking courses in Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures and she is investigation various diving career options. Hillary Viders, Ph.D. 2004 ScholarshipA scholarship awarded to a qualified woman of any age, diver or non-diver, who is enrolled in an accredited academic or research program in the field of marine science and conservation. Awarded To: Andrea MarshallAndrea Marshall is an avid underwater photographer and marine biologist whose documented scientific expeditions have appeared in various books and magazines worldwide. She holds Marine Biology degrees from the University of California and the University of Queensland, Australia. Andrea specializes in the study of sharks and rays. Currently she is researching a population of many rays off the coast of Eastern Africa in rural Mozambique. She plans to use her scholarship to pay for expenses related to her field work. Women Divers Hall of Fame (WDHOF, Inc.) 2004 ScholarshipA scholarship awarded to a deserving woman diver of any age and background who wishes to begin or further her dive education. Awarded To: Sarah Cohen and Darlene ReeseSarah Cohen, a sophomore at Scotch Plains Fanwood High School, New Jersey, was first introduced into the world of diving 2 years ago by her father. Since then, Sarah has advanced her training rapidly and she currently holds several certifications, including Rescue Diver and Dry Suit Diving. She in involved in many school activities and also volunteers at the Children’s Specialized Hospital. Sarah plans to use her scholarship money to further her diving training and education. Darlene Reese has been a practicing Speech-Language Pathologist for nearly 20 years, working with people of all ages and abilities in improving communication skills. As a diver, she has arranged for a collaborative effort with deaf and hearing impaired high school students to provide them with Discover Scuba classes in exchange for helping her create a more comprehensive underwater signing system. She hopes to share this system with other divers through a website and in-service courses. By doing so, she hopes to achieve her goal of sharing her love of diving with a new generation. |
