In 1956, when she was eight, Jacques Cousteau became Margery Spielman’s hero. Certified at 16, she managed a dive shop at 20. From there, she taught scuba (NAUI/PADI) at community college; was a Stunt Diver with SAG-AFTRA and an underwater model. She filmed offshore pipelines for a bioassay lab; did intertidal research on San Nicolas Island and became one of the first women on Cousteau’s Diving Team. An accomplished Marine Artist, Margery has exhibited in Major Marine Art Expos in Maui, Monterey, and Paris. For 31 years, she’s led hikes in the Channel Islands National Park as Lead Naturalist for Road Scholar, inspiring thousands to fall in love with Nature and embody the words of Captain Cousteau: “People protect what they love.”
