Mehgan Heaney-Grier is a pioneering U.S. freediver and ocean explorer. In 1996, at age 19, she established the first U.S. freediving record in the constant weight category for both men and women, diving to 155 feet on a single breath. The following year, she extended the record to 165 feet, and in 1998, she assembled and captained the first U.S. Freedive Team to compete in the Freedive World Cup in Italy. She was inducted into the inaugural class of the Women Divers Hall of Fame in 2000 at age 23, becoming the youngest woman ever inducted. Mehgan is also a Fellow of The Explorers Club. Over the past three decades, Mehgan has built a career as an explorer, educator, and media professional. She has performed underwater stunt work for major motion pictures, including Pirates of the Caribbean, and has led and participated in expeditions and television productions focused on ocean environments and wildlife. A long-time conservationist, her work includes public engagement through speaking, series hosting, and her web series, The Imperfect Conservationist, which highlights practical, bite-sized ways to take action for the environment. Mehgan holds a degree in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and Anthropology, and remains actively engaged in ocean exploration and outreach, connecting people to the ocean through experience, storytelling, and accessible conservation action.
