Season 2, Episode 23 features WDHOF member Elisa Correa — Lisa joined the U.S. Navy in 1992 as a Construction Mechanic with the Seabees and, in 1998, became the first African-American woman to qualify as a Seabee Diver. Her career took her far beyond that historic milestone. At Underwater Construction Team TWO, she supported operations across the Pacific and contributed to Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom-Pacific. She was named Sailor of the Year in both 2008 and 2009 and served as Assistant Dive Locker Operations Officer at NAVFAC ESC.
Her work also shows what makes Seabee diving unique. Underwater Construction Team TWO provides underwater construction, inspection, repair, and maintenance for ocean facilities. During a 2013 Pacific deployment, Lisa served as Construction Dive Detachment ALFA officer-in-charge during work that included pier restoration at Pearl Harbor and joint diving operations in South Korea.
After 23 years of service as a Seabee and Seabee Diver, Lisa marked her retirement with one final official dive in Port Hueneme, California. Today, she continues working in the field as an Ocean Engineering Technician at the NAVFAC Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center.
This conversation is about much more than being first. It is about building a career, leading teams, doing demanding work underwater, creating opportunities for those who follow, and leaving a legacy beneath the surface.
