Jana is a postdoctoral researcher at the Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University, where she is studying how environmental changes like high temperature affect the embryonic survival of echinoderms at a cellular and molecular level. With this grant, she will be trained to collect adult echinoderms from Monterey Bay and spawn them in the laboratory for comparative experimental work. In the long term, Jana aims to lead a laboratory at the intersection of developmental biology and ecology. Her aspiration is to draw on the natural variation found between marine invertebrate species, and individuals of the same species, to determine how the environment shapes development. A scientific diving qualification will be critical for sampling of natural populations. As a developmental biologist and biophysicist who is only just transitioning into marine biology, observing species in their natural habitats will also provide her with a much greater appreciation and context for her research.
