Using words and photography to develop remote regions into world-renowned dive destinations, Maurine Shimlock has pioneered scuba travel to some of the most far-flung locations on earth, while satisfying her passion for discovering new reefs. In 2008 she began working with Conservation International to increase sustainable marine tourism and to educate the local population of Indonesia’s Bird’s Head Seascape about their magnificent marine heritage. The two diving guides she co-authored with her husband Burt Jones, helped stimulate a twenty percent increase in tourism between 2008 and 2011, influencing both the provincial government’s and the local communities’ decision to declare a network of marine sanctuaries in Raja Ampat and beyond.
